At least eight Hindu migrants from Bangladesh have been granted citizenship in West Bengal under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). This group includes Debiprasad Gain, who fled Bangladesh 20 years ago and received his citizenship documents this week. A Bangladeshi Hindu family that migrated to West Bengal's Nadia in 2012 was also granted citizenship. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has alleged that the demography of the border areas of West Bengal has changed and accused the Trinamool Congress of opposing the CAA to aid illegal infiltrators. In total, more than 25,000 applications for citizenship have been received so far, apart from the first set of applicants in Uttarakhand and Haryana. Mamata Banerjee has accused the BJP of using a divide and rule strategy.
