The Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to immediately halt the delivery of 'Viksit Bharat' messages over WhatsApp, citing the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) ahead of the 18th general elections, scheduled between April and June. The EC has also demanded an immediate compliance report from MeitY on this matter. The 'Viksit Bharat' messages, which include a letter from Prime Minister Modi mentioning various schemes and asking for feedback, were intended to be sent before the MCC was enforced but were delayed due to a system error, as claimed by the ministry. TMC leader Sagarika Ghose criticized the EC's directive as 'too little, too late', indicating that the TMC had previously raised concerns about the appropriateness of these messages during the election period.
