Assault on Bhubaneswar Civic Official Spurs BJD Protests, Police Probe

A senior Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation official, Additional Commissioner Ratnakar Sahoo, was assaulted and forcibly dragged from his office on 30 June, according to video footage circulating on social media. News18 reported that four to five men, led by BJP corporator Jeevan Raut, hit Sahoo and attempted to bundle him into a vehicle after accusing him of misbehaving with BJP leader Jagannath Pradhan.

The incident triggered immediate protests. Employees of the municipal corporation stopped work, demanding better security, while hundreds of Biju Janata Dal (BJD) supporters gathered outside the BMC headquarters. Police detained several demonstrators as they tried to block the compound’s gates.

BJD President and former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said he was “utterly shocked” by the attack on a senior civil servant and called the episode evidence of a breakdown in law and order. Party legislator Arun Kumar Sahoo echoed the criticism, alleging that the assault was carried out by “BJP miscreants at the behest of senior leaders.”

Odisha Police have opened an investigation and are reviewing CCTV recordings from the building and nearby streets to identify all participants. No arrests had been announced by late Monday, but officers said the suspects would be charged with assault and abduction if the allegations are confirmed.
