The lawyer for Monojit Mishra, the chief suspect in last week’s alleged gang rape of a 24-year-old law student at South Calcutta Law College, has challenged the prosecution’s account, claiming medical examiners also found “love bites” on the accused’s neck that authorities did not disclose.
Addressing reporters on 2 July, defence counsel Raju Ganguly argued the marks contradict the charge of rape and alleged a conspiracy to frame his client. He questioned why the survivor’s mobile phone and call records have not been presented and highlighted what he said were inconsistencies in the timeline, noting the complaint was filed nearly 18 hours after the purported assault.
Kolkata Police earlier said scratch marks on Mishra’s body indicated resistance by the survivor and have remanded Mishra and two other students to custody until 8 July while they analyse forensic evidence, including video recovered from the accused’s phone. The incident has triggered public outrage in the city, already on edge after a separate rape-murder of a trainee doctor earlier this year.
