The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced that 97.69% of the ₹2,000 banknotes in circulation as of May 19, 2023, have been returned following the withdrawal announcement. This significant return rate reduced the total value of ₹2,000 banknotes from ₹3.56 lakh crores to ₹8,202 crores by March 29, 2024. Additionally, due to the Annual Closing of Accounts, the facility for exchange/deposit of these banknotes will not be available at 19 Issue Offices of the RBI, resuming on April 2, 2024. This move comes in the wake of the demonetisation of ₹500 and ₹1,000 notes, where about 98% of the demonetised currency was returned to the RBI, a move that was initially thought to convert black money into white, according to Supreme Court Justice B. V. Nagarathna.
