During a game, Mika Zibanejad of the New York Rangers fired a shot that hit Edmonton Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner directly in the mask. The impact caused Skinner to shake his head and his mask to come off, prompting officials to blow the whistle and disallow Artemi Panarin's apparent power play goal. Officials conferred and reviewed the play, as the replay suggested Skinner may have intentionally shaken his helmet off. Concurrently, the Rangers were awarded their second power play due to a slashing penalty on Evan Bouchard after an earlier slashing call on Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Despite these opportunities, the Rangers' power play did not result in a goal as Skinner, who remained in the game after the incident, made a save to deny Zibanejad.
EDM's Evan Bouchard has been sent off for slashing Trocheck's stick. #NYR get their second power play.
Trocheck wiggles free and draws a slashing call on Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. #NYR will head back to the PP.
Now Skinner, who was shaken up for a moment but remained in the game, just robbed Mika. #NYR PP was whipping the puck around but ultimately came up empty.
Yeah this won’t count #NYR
No goal. https://t.co/CPljovFff7
An absolute blast from Mika Zibanejad hit Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner directly in the mask. He seemed to shake his head after (maybe from the pain/effect of shot?) and the mask came off, which drew whistles from the officials. Panarin scored on the empty net, but no goal
Stuart Skinner appears to shake his helmet off after Mika Zibanejad's one-timer bounces off of it to a wide-open Artemi Panarin, who scores from the other side. Play is under review. #NYR
Panarin's apparent PPG does not count because EDM goalie Stuart Skinner's helmet came off. But the play is under review. The replay appears to show Skinner shaking his head to make the helmet fall off. Stay tuned.
Skinner takes a Zibanejad clapper off the mask, strap comes loose, shakes his mask off and the whistle blows as Panarin snaps one into the empty net. Officials are conferring, going to the headsets to see if the goal should count.
