Following the death of former Pittsburgh Penguins forward Adam Johnson, there is a push for increased neck protection in the NHL. The Penguins, along with the Boston Bruins, Washington Capitals, and Carolina Hurricanes, have started implementing optional neck protection. The NHL and NHLPA are in talks about making neck guards mandatory for players. The Penguins have already made neck protection gear mandatory for their minor-league players. Some Penguins and Capitals players, including T.J. Oshie, have been seen wearing neck guards during practices and games. Ontario University Athletics has also made neck guards mandatory in men's hockey. A coroner has called for neck guards to be made mandatory in ice hockey to prevent future deaths.

For T.J. Oshie, wearing a neck guard isn't a marketing opportunity or obligation. It's a choice close to his heart with "deeper meaning." Our 1-on-1 about what inspired the shirts, his choice and the wild story behind getting his ready for an NHL game: https://t.co/ya2x6u79Ri

#ICYMI: T.J. Oshie wore a neck guard in Thursday’s game for the Capitals. The Warroad founder shares what went into that decision and has a message to youth players and NHLers on the fence. “I made the choice for my kids. I wanna stick around for ‘em.” https://t.co/lIcpPejQCT

Oshie on being one of the first NHLers to wear a neck guard: “We’re grown men…you can make your own choices. I made my choice for my kids. I want to stick around for ‘em. I’m just trying to decrease the chance of injury.” #Caps
T.J. Oshie is wearing his @WarroadHockeyCo neck guard during the Caps-Isles game after Rasmus Dahlin sported turtleneck-style neck protection in last night's Sabres-Flyers game. The demand for cut-resistant gear is "snowballing" league-wide, according to industry sources.
Oshie still has the Warroad neck guard shirt on for the Capitals and will wear it against the Islanders. Why is this a big deal? Seeing an NHL player wear neck protection in an actual game is huge, especially for kids. Sets an example.
Yes, T.J. Oshie is wearing a neck guard for the Capitals. The Warroad founder spotted one during warmups. They are built into the company’s new base layer shirts. @WarroadHockeyCo https://t.co/LpMfElEoe4

From a 100 feet away, it looks like T.J. Oshie is wearing a base layer shirt with a neck protector as warmup begins. Tom Wilson tested it out this morning but does not appear to be wearing one. #Caps

A new email from Warroad says T.J. Oshie is committed to wearing the base layer shirt with the built-in neck guard, but that he is waiting on a prototype that combines the neck guard and “Padloc” technology that keeps his elbow pads in place. Could debut “as soon as tonight.”
In the wake of Adam Johnson’s death during a game in England this past Saturday, four Pittsburgh Penguins players donned neck protection gear during practice on Thursday. More details from @Real_RobRossi ⤵️
A few Penguins players, including Karlsson, Pettersson, Eller and Graves, are wearing neck guards at today's practice. Mike Sullivan said they couldn't mandate them at the NHL level, but would strongly encourage guys to wear protective equipment in vulnerable areas.

Just as with goalie masks, helmets and visors, NHL players will almost certainly wind up wearing neck protection in response to a player's death -- they'll just need to be prodded into accepting initial discomfort. https://t.co/l8ljAT3cRK #SEAKraken #NHL
