The New York Rangers lost 7-3 to the Toronto Maple Leafs, with goalie Igor Shesterkin attributing the defeat to his own performance. Conversely, the Columbus Blue Jackets emerged victorious with a 4-0 win over the Leafs, thanks to significant contributions from Kent Johnson, Justin Danforth, and Patrik Laine. Johnson's stellar first period performance and Danforth's 7th goal of the season were key to the Blue Jackets' success. Despite Leafs' goalie Samsonov's efforts and their first power play, the Leafs were unable to recover from defensive turnovers.
Matthews hits the crossbar on the Leafs' power play, then Nylander accidentally throws the puck out of the zone. Been that kind of night for the Leafs so far. #CBJ
#Leafs to their first power play after Fantilli trips Nylander at 11:04 of the second.
Fantilli gets a clean look at Samsonov but the Leafs goalie just gets enough of his shot to make the stop to keep it 4-0. Then Fantilli takes a penalty, so the Leafs get the game's first power play. #CBJ
GOOOOAAAALLLL JACKETS!!!! Chinakhov with an absolutely NASTY move to make it 4-0!! #CBJ
What a take to the net there by Chinakhov, cuts inside Brodie and shoots it past Samsonov on the short side of the net. #CBJ
#CBJ lead 3-0 as Danforth scores his 7th goal of the season shorthanded 8:16 into the 2nd period. Assists to Provorov and Jiricek.
Danforth, 3-0 Columbus at 8:16 of the second. Banks shot off Samsonov after puck comes off end boards. #Leafs
#CBJ Danforth with a backhand flipper on #LeafsForever Samsonov, puck going off the tendy's backside and into the net. Now 3-0 #CBJ, a 4-on-4 goal, at 8:16 of the second.
GOOOOAAALLLL JACKETS!!! Danforth backhands a puck off of the goalie and in to the net!! What a heads up play! Jackets up 3-0. #CBJ
🚨 #CBJ goal: Justin Danforth The Ontario kid gets on the board with a lot of friends and family here. David Jiricek with a great move to break down the defense, then feeds Provorov for a shot. That one goes wide, but Danforth gets there and banks it in off Samsonov. 3-0
Danforth with a backhand off Samsonov into the net and it's 3-0 #CBJ ... and his peeps in the house can celebrate even more.
Leafs dominant to start the second. Merzlikins keeping them off the board thus far, but how long can that wall hold up? #CBJ needs to get some momentum back fast.
Jiricek picks out Marchenko back post with a wide open net, and Marchy fans on the shot. Could very well have been 3-0 there. Great pass by Jiricek. #CBJ
Fantilli line out first again vs Matthews line to start the 2nd. #CBJ 2-0 over #LeafsForever
#CBJ have been a really good first-period team this year. Things get progressively worse in the second and third, so let's see if they can keep it going in Toronto with a 2-0 lead starting the 2nd vs #LeafsForever
#Leafs down 2-0 after one period, sloppy D-zone play puts Toronto in a hole. Shots on goal 11-9 Blue Jackets.
#CBJ up 2-0 after one on the goals from Laine and Johnson. Pretty solid start for the Jackets, who own an 11-9 edge in shots on goal. ABBA playing us off at the end of the period, which I absolutely approve of if they're not gonna use the Hall and Oates goal song here anymore.
A deserved 2-0 lead for the #CBJ here early. Jackets have forced the Leafs into a string of defensive zone turnovers and icings so far. Good to see the Jackets with legs after a few days off finally.
Johnson scores his 2nd goal of the campaign to give #CBJ a 2-0 lead with 8:04 left in the 1st period. Assist to Peeke.
Johnson already has 1-1-2 and we've got just under eight mins left 1st ... and he almost had an apple by dropping a dime to Gaudreau in the slot. #CBJ up 2-0 on #LeafsForever in the 1st.
#CBJ Kent Johnson having a great first period. He redirects an Andrew Peeke shot from the right point and it's 2-0 #CBJ at 11:56 Johnson a goal, an assist, and slew of strong individual plays.
GOOOOAAALLL JACKETS!!!! Peeke shoots it! KJ deflects it top shelf! Jackets lead 2-0! #CBJ
Johnson re-directs a Peeke shot over Samsonov's right shoulder. Columbus leads 2-0 against a #Leafs team that has been off through 12 minutes.
Kent Johnson with a deflection that goes upstairs. It's 2-0 CBJ.
Now Johnson scores one by tipping Peeke's wrister from the right point. It's 2-0 #CBJ with 8:04 left 1st. #LeafsForever
🚨 #CBJ goal: Kent Johnson KJ has been buzzing, and he tips a shot from Andrew Peeke expertly past Samsonov, who had no chance. Jackets kept forcing the Leafs into a string of icings and take advantage. Jackets up 2-0 with 8:04 left in the first.
Johnson with another great feed from behind the Leafs' net there to Gaudreau, but Samsonov stops it. Fantastic hand/eye play by Johnson on a one-man forecheck to swipe that puck and start looking for open teammates. #CBJ
Kent Johnson picks off another pass behind the Leafs net, just like the first goal. Looked for a second like he might try a Michigan again, but instead feeds the onrushing Gaudreau, whose shot is stopped by Samsonov. #CBJ
Risky-but-instinctive decision by Jiricek to come down the RW wall with a head of steam to keep the puck in the Leafs' zone ... where it finds its way to Voronkov alone in front of the net. Samsonov with a great glove save to keep it 1-0 #CBJ over #LeafsForever mid-1st
Chinakhov pokes a puck free to Voronkov right in front of the net, all alone, but he doesn't have much room and Samsonov gloves his quick shot. #CBJ getting some good looks here early though, already up 1-0.
Voronkov with an unreal cross-crease feed to find Marchenko sneaking in the back door, but Samsonov reads the play and gets over for the stop on Marchy's shot. Another example of the chemistry on that #CBJ line, though.
That shift by the #CBJ third line that culminated in Laine's go-ahead goal was preceded by a really nice shift from the second line ... Voronkov's group. They helped dig the Jackets out of their own end and flip the ice on the Leafs.
#CBJ strike first as Laine scores his 6th goal of the season 6:19 into the game. Assist to Johnson.
Kent Johnson now with four assists in the last four games. Looking a lot more like Kent Johnson of late. Made that setup look easy. Three goals for Laine in his last five games as well. #CBJ
What a pass from Johnson there, no-look reverse to Laine's tape in the low slot from an easy redirect over Samsonov's glove for a 1-0 #CBJ lead over #LeafsForever 6:19 into the game.
Great look from #CBJ Kent Johnson behind the goal, a quick-read backhand pass into the slot. There's Laine for the finish. 1-0 #CBJ at 6:19 of the first.
GOOOOAAALLLL JACKETS!!! Beautiful pass from KJ to Laine! Jackets lead 1-0! #CBJ
Laine, 1-0 Columbus at 6:19. Goal comes after Domi turnover deep in the D zone. #Leafs
🚨 #CBJ goal: Patrik Laine Laine finishes in front but immediately points at Kent Johnson, who set him up with a quick, decisive, on the tape pass from behind the net. Sick pass by KJ, Laine a fairly academic finish past Samsonov. Jackets up 1-0 6:19 in
1-0 #CBJ ... Johnson no-look pass from behind the net to Laine in the low slot. Bang. Goal.
Patrik Laine opens the scoring for CBJ. 1-0.
Merzlikins to the left, Samsonov to the right, and #CBJ hockey is under way in Toronto.

FINAL — Maple Leafs 7, #NYR 3 Rangers simply could not recover from a lethargic first period. Season-high seven goals given up.
With Erik Gustafsson in the box for interference, Mitch Marner scores on the power play to put Toronto up 5-3 on #NYR
Marner with a deflection from the high slot right off the power play draw. 5-3 TOR at 1:29 of the 3rd
Big save from Igor on Marner on another TOR rush chance, but in the ensuing scramble, Erik Gustafsson was whistled for interference. Power play coming for the Leafs.
Leafs tried to shut the #NYR down in the 2nd, didnt last long. #NYR down 4-3 heading to the third
