The ban was lifted after Arizona Coyotes defenseman Travis Dermott defied the policy by using Pride tape on his stick. The NHL, NHLPA, and Player Inclusion Coalition had been discussing the ban, and Dermott's actions pushed for the policy change. The league will now allow players to voluntarily represent social causes with their stick tape throughout the season.
