The NHL is investigating a 2018 Team Canada sex scandal involving players including Carter Hart. Danny Briere, a Flyers executive, stated they are aware of the serious matter and will respond appropriately. Briere also mentioned the team's goalie surplus and Samuel Ersson's development. Briere believes Ersson can be a No. 1 goaltender but emphasized the need to protect him during his development. The London Police directed five players from the 2018 Canadian World Junior team, including Michael McLeod and Cal Foote, to surrender in connection with an alleged sexual assault. Briere indicated that the NHL has instructed teams to direct questions about the Hockey Canada investigation to the league and to respect the investigation without comment.
Danny Briere: "We don't what is going to happen with Carter. The team has put themselves in a great situation, that's the exciting part. The other exciting part is that Sam Ersson has taken a big step forward. We will have to protect him as much as we can, he's still developing"
From earlier: #NJDevils players Michael McLeod and Cal Foote were granted leave of absences today, just hours after London Police directed five players from their 2018 Canadian World Junior team to surrender in connection with an alleged sexual assault. https://t.co/iQmb3qfnC2
The 2018 Hockey Canada investigation, here is what we know: Dillon Dube granted a leave of absence by Flames (Mental Health) Carter Hart granted a leave of absence for "Personal reasons” Michael McLeod and Cal Foote granted a leave of absence by Devils
Danny Briere opens his presser: "We are aware of this morning’s press reports on a very serious matter. We will respond appropriately when the outcomes of the investigations are made public." #Flyers
The Flyers and Danny Briere were handcuffed today. Of course, Briere couldn't comment on such, but now it's time to clear those names involved in the Hockey Canada investigation, and charge those responsible for this heinous crime that was committed Let's see how this pans out
Danny Briere led off today's press conference with a statement: “We are aware of this morning’s press reports on a very serious matter. We will respond appropriately when the outcomes of the investigations are made public. The NHL has been very clear that teams should refer...
Basically, Briere didn't -- and per the NHL's directive, couldn't -- say anything about today's report. That said, that the Flyers were directed to stay quiet, in tandem with the timing of Hart's leave of absence, is fairly telling as to a possible connection between the two.
Danny Briere did make an opening statement on Hockey Canada. The NHL told teams to direct any questions regarding the ongoing Hockey Canada investigation to the league.
Danny Briere: "Don't expect us to pry away assets to make a run." #Flyers
“I love how we come into games thinking we’re going to win the game. … We’re going in the right direction.” - Danny Briere on Flyers’ standard/culture
Have also reached out to the NHL for comment. League isn't commenting at this time. I'm guessing the NHL is waiting to see how things further evolve with London police and the players in question. At some point, presumably, there will be NHL discipline on this as well but we… https://t.co/TgIeXIm4z6
Briere says that he does believe that Sam Ersson has the upside of being a No. 1 goaltender for an NHL team. Said they have to be careful putting too much pressure on him and he's still young. But they believe he can be a top-of-the-depth-chart goalie over the long-term.
Danny Briere believes Samuel Ersson can be a No. 1 goaltender in the NHL: “I absolutely believe that but still you don’t want to put too much pressure early.” Briere told the media. #LetsGoFlyers
“We don’t know what’s going to happen with Carter.” Danny Briere told the media. Briere also said they are in a good place with a goalie surplus and Samuel Ersson has taken huge steps in his development. #LetsGoFlyers
Danny Briere made opening statement that NHL has told teams to direct any questions regarding investigation and report on Hockey Canada to the league. Flyers have to respect investigation without comment. https://t.co/ScttYA8bnj
Have reached out to NHL for comment. NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said there is nothing the league can say at this time. https://t.co/tUx7V6467X
London Police on report that 5 former 2018 WJC team members told to surrender on charges of sexual assault: "We are unable to provide an update at this time. When there is further information to share regarding this investigation, we will be in contact with media outlets."
About time. Everyone with Hockey Canada who had a hand in covering this up should also be charged. https://t.co/QC7lVg9BGL
I suspected the reason for the delay in reporting the results of an NHL investigation was the league didn't want to punish anyone without actual legal charges being filed, out of lawsuit concerns. If the players are being charged by London police, that changes everything.
(Part 2) At the time, Fenton said Hart was among the players who cooperated with the London (Ontario) Police Service investigation and was “cleared of any wrongdoing.” Why the NHL has taken 20 months to investigate (and is still apparently investigating) is puzzling. #Flyers
Danny Briere may not address the Carter Hart situation today. In 2022, attorney Scott Fenton, representing Hart, told the Toronto Star, that the goalie did not engage in any wrongdoing in the 2018 Team Canada sex scandal. (Part 1)
Danny Briere will speak to the media tomorrow. I'll keep you in the loop Flyers fans https://t.co/otuH4WflIN
