The Montreal Canadiens faced off against the Toronto Maple Leafs in their season opener. Jake Allen started in goal for the Canadiens. The Leafs took a 3-2 lead with a power-play goal from William Nylander. Auston Matthews scored a remarkable shot to tie the game at 2-2. The score remained tied at 2-2 until late in the second period when the Canadiens took a 3-0 lead, but it was overturned due to an offside challenge. Despite letting in a bad goal, Jake Allen made important saves to keep the Canadiens in the game. The Canadiens had a slow second period with only two shots, but they made a comeback in the third period, scoring three goals to take a 5-4 lead. However, Auston Matthews completed his eighth career hat trick with 1:07 left in the third period, tying the game at 5-5. Jake Evans scored the first Canadiens goal of the season to give them a 1-0 lead. Cole Caufield and Alex Newhook quickly added two more goals, giving the Canadiens a 4-3 lead over the Leafs.

Matthews, despite scoring a hat trick, said the new goal song didnβt register with him. #Leafs
Matthews' eighth career hat trick. #Leafs
Auston Matthews hat trick goal with 1:07 left gets #Leafs even with #Habs at 5-5. A stupid fun game.
Leafs tie it up 5-5 with #Habs with 1:07 left in third period. What a crazy game. #HabsIO
Matthews, hat trick. Game tied 5-5 with 1:07 to go in the third. #Leafs
Make that two bad goals given up by goalie Jake Allen as Leafs cut Canadiens' lead to 5-4. #HabsIO
#Habs had two shots in second period vs. Leafs and now they have three goals in third period. #HabsIO
Jake Allen did let in a bad goal tonight - the first one - but he made some huge saves with #Habs down 3-2 to keep them in it and set stage for this comeback. #HabsIO
Two quick goals from Cole Caufield and Alex Newhook and #Habs are up 4-3 on Leafs. #HabsIO
Leafs go up 3-2 on #Habs with power-play goal from William Nylander. Leafs power play is pretty awesome. #HabsIO
#Leafs and #Habs 2-2 late 2nd. MON scored to go up 3-0 but it was wiped out on offside challenge. No sympathy. Habs ruined the league with these by crabbing about the Tampa playoff goal.
What a shot by Auston Matthews as Leafs tie it up 2-2 with #Habs #HabsIO
Jake Allen has to stop that shot. #Habs 2, Leafs 1. #HabsIO
What a breakaway move by Jake Evans to score first Canadiens goal of season to go up 1-0 on Maple Leafs #Habs #HabsIO
