Morgan Rielly, a defenseman for the Toronto Maple Leafs, has been suspended for five games by the NHL's Department of Player Safety, a decision that could potentially cost the Leafs a first-round pick. The team, along with Rielly, intends to appeal the suspension, citing concerns over its severity. Sheldon Keefe announced that Brad Treliving would address the media, however, it was later clarified that Treliving would not speak as the appeal process is underway. The appeal hearing, involving NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, is scheduled for noon ET tomorrow in New York. Bettman will review if the Department of Player Safety's decision is supported by clear and convincing evidence. John Tavares, Rielly's teammate, commented on the suspension, stating it was high and praising Rielly for his leadership and dedication to the team. The appeal will be attended by Rielly, his agent J.P Barry, Brad Treliving, and NHLPA lawyers, aiming to compare the suspension with similar past incidents.
Based on past appeals that Bettman has seen, a decision on Rielly appeal's isn't expected to take long to render. ⤵️ https://t.co/VHfvw381HE https://t.co/VHfvw381HE

More Tavares on Rielly: "We loved the response he showed & sticking up for the group & the way we compete & stand our ground and play for the logo on our chest. He represents that more than anyone, I think, in this hockey club. We love him as a teammate and how he leads." #Leafs
Tavares on Rielly's 5-game suspension: "Obviously, we think it’s high. I don't think his intent was to get him as high as he did. But I think we want to stand our ground when situations like that happen." #Leafs

The CBA says Gary Bettman will "endeavor" to hear suspension appeals on an "expedited basis." He determines if @NHLPlayerSafety decision is supported by "clear and convincing evidence." If he keeps Morgan Rielly's suspension at five games or less, Bettman's ruling is final.
