Elias Pettersson of the Vancouver Canucks was penalized for charging during a game against the Edmonton Oilers. The incident occurred when Pettersson, while possessing the puck, was hit by Warren Foegele. Pettersson attempted to protect himself by lifting his arms and leaving his feet, which led to the charging call and a two-minute penalty. This decision caused significant controversy among fans and commentators, with many questioning the validity of the call since Pettersson was standing still and Foegele was the one charging at him. The call led to fans littering the ice with trash, prompting an in-arena announcement reminding them of potential ejection or arrest for such behavior.
I've seen some questions about whether Elias Pettersson should have been whistled for charging earlier in the period and I assure you the rulebook allows for it. https://t.co/fcOtLljFH0
Charging covers a hit in which a player "jumps into" their opponent, which I suppose is why that reverse hit got called as such against Pettersson? Tough one no matter how you slice it. #Canucks
Elias Pettersson gets two minutes for charging against Warren Foegele. https://t.co/J3x1ZIK3Y8
Even if you follow the letter of the rule of charging, the fact Pettersson left his feet, it's a dubious call because he's standing still with Foegle charging at him
Pettersson tried to protect himself as Foegele hit him at speed from behind as he possessed puck at Oiler blueline. Pettersson put his arms up to lessen the blow and gets called for charging. Charging? Mercy. #Canucks
This is a terribly officiated game. Both teams must be shaking their heads. Standing still, Pettersson gets called for charging. I believe you have to be moving to get called for charging.
They're saying Pettersson jumped into Foegele. That's the call.
Pettersson did jump.. but I've never seen charging called on the player with the puck before
Pettersson is called for charging on a reverse hit (he jumped) and fans litter the ice with garbage.
Pettersson called for not tucking his elbow on a reverse hit, although they called it charging(?), and fans are littering the ice with trash. @ALMURDOCH gives the "subject to ejection or arrest" reminder in-arena. Safe to say Rogers Arena faithful are *livid* with the call.
Pettersson left his feet. Of course that's a penalty.
