The Vancouver Canucks have signed restricted free agent defenceman Filip Hronek to an eight-year contract extension worth $58 million, with an annual average value (AAV) of $7.25 million. The deal, announced by General Manager Patrik Allvin, secures Hronek, who had one of the strongest arbitration cases in years, avoiding the need for arbitration. Hronek recorded five goals and 43 assists in the 2023-24 regular season. This contract positions Hronek alongside Quinn Hughes, forming a top defensive pair for the Canucks, with both players under contract for a combined $15.1 million for the next three seasons. Hronek's AAV matches that of Devon Toews of Colorado, but Hronek's deal includes an extra year.
#Canucks top pair — and one of the top duos in #NHL — under contract for $15.1M for next three seasons. That’s a solid building block

#Canucks, Filip Hronek agree to 8-year, $58 million extension: Why the deal works. My quick take on the big deal at @TheAthleticNHL: https://t.co/eU6YMvlmSJ
Hronek gets the $7.25 million AAV that Devon Toews has in Colorado, but gets the extra year vs Toews’ 7 year deal. In total a $58 million deal. We all know he can play with Quinn Hughes at a very high level, I’m curious to see how much he can drive his own pair next season.
With Filip Hronek's leverage - he had one of the strongest arbitration cases we've seen in years - it was always going to take a premium price to get his autograph on an extension. This isn't a team friendly deal, but it's a fair outcome for an indispensable piece. #Canucks
One big piece of offseason puzzle. Restricted free agent Filip Hronek avoids arbitration, agrees to eight-year contract with average annual value of US$7.25 million. Complete story up soon. @theprovince @provincesports #Canucks

Even if you think Hronek's deal comes in a little on the high side, it's still a better option than dipping into free agency and having to overpay for Pesce/Roy etc.
