The Vancouver Canucks displayed a strong performance in Game 5 of their series against the Edmonton Oilers, successfully killing all five of Edmonton's power plays. The Canucks' penalty kill was particularly effective, marking the first time in the series they prevented the Oilers from scoring on their first power play opportunity. Despite being down 2-1 after the first period, Vancouver managed to generate 11 shots and dominate the second period, outshooting Edmonton 12-2 at 5-on-5. The game was tied 2-2 going into the final period, with the series also tied at 2-2. Notably, the Canucks' aggressive forecheck and penalty kill were highlighted as key factors in their performance. Vancouver had 18 shots in the second period, while the Oilers had 4. A goal was also scored by new father PDG.
#Canucks outshot Edmonton 12-2 at 5-on-5 in the 2nd period. Even though the Oilers PP went O-fer, the frequency of 5-on-4 play probably permitted Edmonton to survive VAN's push. An absolute mauling with almost no relationship to what we saw in Games 2, 3 and 4 of this series.
Best period for Canucks since Game 1. 18 shots. 4 for Oilers. 2 VAN PKs. 1 goal for new father PDG. 2-2 in series, 2-2 in game. What a series.
Oilers’ PP now 0 for 5 Tonight. Canucks’ aggressive PK has been very good tonight. #StanleyCupPlayoffs
Oilers are just trying to survive this period. They need to fix their breakout at intermission, because the #Canucks forecheck has been completely dominant in the second. Easily Vancouver's best frame of the playoffs + not even a steady flow of weird whistles can obscure it.
Oilers haven't had many penalties in this series (2.5 per game on average). This is really the first game that's favoured them in terms of the flow of the whistles, and they're 0/4 on the power play. #Canucks PK getting it done in Game 5.
#Canucks probably fortunate to get out of first down 2-1 with three Oilers power plays. Killed those off. Nux will like fact they generated 11 shots. Oil will like goals from lower in their line-up
That’s the first time #Canucks have successfully killed #Oilers first PP of a game in this series. They scored on their first opportunity in each of the first four games.
