Karnataka Orders Probe Into 18 Sudden Cardiac Deaths in Hassan

Karnataka’s Health and Family Welfare Department has opened an investigation into an unusual cluster of heart-attack deaths in Hassan district after at least 18 people reportedly died of cardiac arrest during June. Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao said the concentration of cases in a single district, several involving people under 40, was “alarming” and required a scientific review.

Rao has instructed officials to gather full medical records and mortality data and appointed an expert committee headed by the director of the Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research. The panel will work with the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences and is expected to submit its findings within 10 days.

Preliminary figures cited by district officials put total fatalities at 21, including five people aged 19–25 and eight aged 25–45. The review will look for potential links to Covid-19, vaccination status, lifestyle factors and any localized risks before the state decides on further public-health measures.
