Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is recognized as one of the most significant health challenges globally, with experts predicting it could lead to an annual decline of up to 3.8% in global GDP by 2050. The issue poses serious risks to human and animal health, biodiversity, and nature. A series of papers in The Lancet highlight the scope of the threat, potential interventions to reduce AMR deaths, and ways to expand access to effective antibiotics. Infection prevention methods could potentially save 750,000 lives annually. Recently, delegates at the 77th World Health Assembly (WHA77) approved a resolution to accelerate national and global responses to AMR, in preparation for the upcoming UN General Assembly High-Level Meeting on AMR in September 2024. Dr. Tedros emphasized the urgency of addressing AMR, calling it a leading cause of death globally.
