Germany’s Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) published its 2024 annual report in Berlin on 10 June, with Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt and BfV Vice-President Sinan Selen warning of mounting security threats.
The agency counted 50,250 right-wing extremists, a 23 percent increase from 2023, and registered 57,701 right-wing offences, including 2,976 violent crimes—up 46 percent year on year. Islamist, left-wing and Reichsbürger movements also expanded, while officials highlighted a trend toward rapid online radicalisation among minors.
Roughly 20,000 of the identified right-wing extremists belong to the opposition party Alternative für Deutschland, which the BfV recently classified as extremist. The growth of AfD membership was cited as a principal driver of the broader surge in far-right activity.
Dobrindt said additional staff, funding and legal powers were needed to "arm ourselves against rising threats both on the street and online," yet he rejected calls to initiate proceedings to ban the AfD, arguing the report does not meet the legal threshold. Bremen’s SPD interior senator Ullrich Mäurer similarly cautioned that the intelligence dossier contains weaknesses that would hamper any prohibition effort.
