Germany Confirms Talks With U.S. to Fund Patriot Systems for Ukraine

Germany is holding “intensive talks” with the United States to purchase Patriot air-defense systems and missiles that would be transferred to Ukraine, government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius said on Friday. The discussions follow a temporary U.S. freeze on certain arms shipments that has heightened concern in Berlin about Kyiv’s dwindling stock of Patriot interceptors amid heavier Russian drone and missile strikes.

Tabloid daily Bild earlier reported that Berlin has asked Washington to approve the sale of two Patriot batteries and several hundred missiles, with Germany prepared to cover the full cost. The request, submitted more than four weeks ago, is awaiting a decision from U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, according to the report.

Officials are weighing several options, including sourcing the systems from existing U.S. inventories or new production lines. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is expected in Washington later this month for talks that will include air-defense support for Kyiv, a German defense ministry official said.

The initiative illustrates Europe’s efforts to plug gaps created by Washington’s pause in supplies and to reinforce Ukraine’s air defenses as U.S. political uncertainty clouds future military assistance.
