Pope Leo XIV has appointed French Archbishop Thibault Verny as president of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors, replacing U.S. Cardinal Seán Patrick O’Malley, who led the body since its creation in 2014. The commission advises the Church on best practices to prevent abuse, encourage accountability and support survivors; under Verny, it is expected to strengthen coordination with national episcopal conferences and expand resources for dioceses with limited means.
