The Trump administration has introduced a policy to increase oil production in the Gulf of America, formerly known as the Gulf of Mexico, by 100,000 barrels per day. The move comes after President Donald Trump signed an executive order on January 20 reversing previous restrictions on offshore drilling and renaming the Gulf of Mexico.
The Department of the Interior, led by Secretary Doug Burgum, has changed regulations to allow offshore drilling operations to tap multiple oil reservoirs at once and to raise the permitted pressure differential from 200 psi to 1500 psi. This process, called downhole commingling, is expected to boost output by about 10%.
A University of Texas study cited by the department estimates that the policy could enable up to 61% more oil production over the next 30 years. The Wilcox formation, including discoveries such as Jack, St. Malo, Cascade, and Tiber, is central to the change.
The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement, with Principal Deputy Director Kenneth Stevens, stated that the advancement will increase recovery from existing wells and reduce costs per barrel. New safety measures include fluid compatibility certification and enhanced pressure monitoring. The policy update also follows the restoration of the name Mount McKinley in Alaska. The administration noted that inflation reached 22% under former President Joe Biden.
