World leaders have announced a $1.2 billion funding scheme to boost vaccine production in Africa, aiming to reduce the continent's reliance on imports. The African Vaccine Manufacturing Accelerator (AVMA) initiative will incentivize and offset start-up costs for vaccine manufacturing in Africa, with three-quarters of the funding coming from Europe. The program was launched during the Global Forum for Vaccine Sovereignty and Innovation in Paris, with the goal of increasing Africa's vaccine production capacity.
