Coinbase, Gemini Set for EU-Wide Licences Under MiCA Amid Regulator Rift

Coinbase Global Inc. and Gemini Trust Co. are poised to obtain the first pan-European licences under the European Union’s new Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework, according to Reuters sources. Coinbase is expected to be authorised by Luxembourg’s regulator, while Gemini is awaiting approval in Malta. The permits, which could be granted within weeks, would allow both exchanges to "passport" their services across all 27 EU member states.

The anticipated approvals have exposed divisions inside the bloc. Supervisors in Germany, France and the Netherlands, Reuters reported, are uneasy about leaving primary oversight to jurisdictions perceived as more permissive. They warn that uneven standards could spur a regulatory "race to the bottom," whereas officials in Malta and Luxembourg defend their vetting processes and say MiCA already provides common safeguards.

Coinbase and Gemini are seeking growth outside the United States as domestic rules remain unsettled. Securing MiCA licences would significantly expand their European footprint and set a precedent for other crypto firms looking to access the EU’s single market under the forthcoming regime.
