At least 24 people were killed when flash floods swept through Kerr County in the Texas Hill Country early Friday, Sheriff Larry Leitha said, after a cloudburst sent the Guadalupe River surging over its banks during Fourth-of-July celebrations.
The National Weather Service estimated 10–12 inches of rain fell in just a few hours. River gauges showed the Guadalupe rising about 26 feet within 45 minutes, cresting near record levels and tearing through homes, bridges and an RV park.
Rescue teams have evacuated or rescued roughly 236 people, including 167 hoisted by helicopter, yet about 23 girls from the 750-bed Camp Mystic near Hunt remain unaccounted for. Power, water and internet service were knocked out across parts of Kerrville, Ingram and Comfort.
Acting Governor Dan Patrick said the state has deployed more than 500 emergency personnel, 14 helicopters and a fleet of drones and boats; Governor Greg Abbott issued a disaster declaration and pledged “all necessary resources.”
Authorities warned residents to stay off flooded roads and away from the river as additional rain threatens the area. Officials cautioned that the death toll could rise while search-and-rescue operations continue through the holiday weekend.
