Texas Floods Kill Chiefs Owner Hunt Relative, Dozens Missing at Camp

Severe flash floods swept through Texas Hill Country over the holiday weekend, sending the Guadalupe River surging roughly 30 feet above normal levels and inundating Camp Mystic, an all-girls Christian summer camp in Kerr County that was housing about 750 children. State and local officials said at least 82 people were confirmed dead across six counties, with 68 fatalities recorded in Kerr County alone. Rescue teams are continuing to search for 10 campers and one counselor who remain unaccounted for.

Among those killed was nine-year-old Janie Hunt, a cousin of Kansas City Chiefs owner and chief executive Clark Hunt. The camp’s long-time director, Richard “Dick” Eastland, 70, also died while attempting to protect campers from the rising water. It was Janie Hunt’s first summer at the camp.

Clark Hunt’s wife, Tavia, said the family had donated $500,000 to the Salvation Army to support emergency response and long-term recovery efforts. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has pledged additional state resources as searches continue and preliminary damage assessments begin.
