Tanker Vilamoura Disabled by Mystery Blast Off Libya, Fifth Case in 2025

An oil tanker carrying about 1 million barrels of crude was disabled by an explosion in the Mediterranean off the Libyan coast on 30 June, according to ship manager TMS Tankers. The vessel, the Liberia-flagged Vilamoura, took on water after the blast flooded its engine room and is being towed to Greece for inspection. All crew members are safe and no pollution has been detected, the company said.

The cause of the explosion remains unknown. Vessel-tracking data compiled by Bloomberg show the Vilamoura visited the Russian port of Ust-Luga in April and the Caspian Pipeline Consortium terminal near Novorossiysk in May, loading cargoes of Kazakh-origin oil on both occasions.

Consultancy Vanguard Tech counts the Vilamoura as the fifth tanker to suffer an unexplained blast this year after recent calls at Russian ports. Maritime authorities have opened an investigation amid heightened concern over the security of commercial shipping in the region.
