Paris Closes Eiffel Tower Summit as Heatwave Triggers Red Alert

Paris and 15 other French departments were placed on the highest red-alert heat warning on Tuesday after Meteo France forecast maximum temperatures of 36 °C to 41 °C and unusually warm overnight lows above 20 °C. Operators shut the summit of the 330-metre Eiffel Tower through at least Wednesday to protect visitors and staff.

Authorities banned all but the least-polluting vehicles from the Île-de-France road network from 5:30 a.m. to midnight and imposed 20 km/h speed reductions. The government said almost 1,350 schools were partially or fully closed—about twice Monday’s number—and urged residents, especially older people and children, to stay hydrated and limit outdoor activity.

The heatwave is part of a broader spell of extreme weather stretching from the Iberian Peninsula to the Balkans. Spain recorded 46 °C in El Granado, a June national record, while Portugal registered 46.6 °C in Mora. Scientists say climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of such events, which have already heightened wildfire risks in Italy, Turkey and parts of Portugal.
