Nord Stream 2 AG, the operator of the sabotaged gas pipeline, has narrowly avoided bankruptcy after a Swiss court in Zug approved a restructuring agreement with its creditors. The agreement, reached on April 30, allows the company to continue operating and searching for new investors. The decision comes after the company faced significant financial difficulties, with debts amounting to 10 billion euros. The pipeline, which spans 1200 kilometers and was never operational due to geopolitical tensions, was damaged in a sabotage attack in September 2022. There is speculation about potential U.S. investors, including Stephen P. Lynch, a wealthy businessman and supporter of U.S. President Donald Trump, who sees the purchase as an opportunity to bring European energy supply under American and European control. The pipeline could potentially be part of a U.S.-Russian agreement to resolve the Ukraine conflict, as mentioned by Russian Foreign Minister Sergej Lawrow. Gas market analyst Heiko Lohmann has expressed skepticism about the pipeline's future as a gas conduit.
