California Governor Gavin Newsom on Tuesday unveiled a wildfire-prevention initiative branded “Make America Rake Again,” pressing President Donald Trump to intensify forest-management efforts on federal land. Speaking in Placer County, Newsom said he has drafted a model executive order for the White House that would direct the U.S. Forest Service and other agencies to expand vegetation-removal and prescribed-burn programs across California.

Newsom argued that Washington bears primary responsibility for reducing fire risk because federal agencies control 57% of the state’s forestland, while Sacramento oversees just 3%. He said California has already spent about $350 million clearing brush and dead trees on federally owned acreage, and has invested billions more in state-run prevention work.

The governor’s proposal seeks additional federal funding, higher pay for U.S. wildland firefighters and streamlined permitting to accelerate projects. He framed the request as a practical step following years of lethal fire seasons, urging Trump to sign the draft order immediately to protect communities ahead of peak fire months.
