A 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck near Malibu, California, at approximately 7:28 AM on September 12, 2024. The quake was felt widely across the Los Angeles area, including Santa Monica and Century City. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake was centered 2.49 miles northwest of Malibu. The National Weather Service confirmed that no tsunami is expected as a result of the quake. Initial reports indicate no immediate injuries or significant damage. The ShakeAlert system was activated, providing early warnings to residents. Aftershocks, including a 4.7 magnitude tremor, were also recorded. Additionally, a 2.3 magnitude earthquake was reported 2 miles southeast of Westminster, and another tremor was felt 4.9 miles southwest of Agoura Hills. The LAFD issued an alert following the quake.
