U.S. Representative María Elvira Salazar on Wednesday urged President Donald Trump to impose Global Magnitsky sanctions on Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, accusing the judge of abusing his authority to suppress political opposition and curb free expression. In a statement posted on social media, the Florida Republican called for Moraes’s U.S. assets to be frozen and his visa revoked, alleging that he has “transformed the Supreme Court into a political weapon.” Salazar chairs the House Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, giving her remarks added prominence amid a broader uptick in U.S.–Brazil tensions. One day earlier, Trump threatened to levy a 50% tariff on Brazilian imports if the court continues legal actions against former president Jair Bolsonaro—a case Moraes oversees. The Global Magnitsky Act allows the United States to sanction foreign officials implicated in corruption or serious human-rights violations, but the State Department has not indicated whether it is reviewing Moraes’s conduct. Neither the Brazilian Foreign Ministry nor the Supreme Court had commented on Salazar’s request as of late Wednesday. Any U.S. move to penalize a sitting member of Brazil’s top court would mark an unprecedented escalation between the two countries, potentially complicating trade negotiations already strained by the proposed tariff increase.
