The French state went on trial in Paris on 11 June after Éric Mouzin, the father of missing schoolgirl Estelle Mouzin, filed a civil action accusing the authorities of gross negligence ("faute lourde") and denial of justice in the handling of the case. Estelle Mouzin disappeared on 9 January 2003 at the age of nine while walking home from school in Guermantes, Seine-et-Marne. More than two decades and several investigative teams later, the inquiry has yet to produce a definitive outcome. Mouzin contends that investigators committed serious errors, particularly by neglecting for years to pursue potential links to convicted serial killer Michel Fourniret. Calling the lawsuit a "symbolic step to obtain the condemnation of the State for these 20 lost years," he seeks formal recognition of official responsibility for the protracted investigative failures.
