Russia sharply condemned Israel’s latest air-strikes on Iran, calling the operation a violation of the United Nations Charter and international law. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow is “deeply concerned” by the rapid escalation and added that President Vladimir Putin is receiving continuous reports from the Defence Ministry, the Foreign Ministry and the Foreign Intelligence Service. A statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry described the strikes on a sovereign UN member state and its civilian infrastructure as “categorically unacceptable” and warned that there is no military solution to issues surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme. The ministry said a more detailed diplomatic note would follow shortly. Putin held separate telephone conversations on 13 June with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. According to the Kremlin readout, the Russian leader expressed condolences for Iranian casualties, told Netanyahu that Israel’s actions breached the UN Charter, and offered Moscow’s readiness to act as mediator to prevent further escalation. He also stressed that questions about Iran’s nuclear activities must be resolved through diplomacy rather than force. At the United Nations, Russia’s permanent representative Vasily Nebenzya echoed the Kremlin’s line, labelling the Israeli attack a “gross violation” of international norms and asserting that responsibility for any consequences lies with Israel and its supporters. Moscow urged both Tehran and Jerusalem to exercise restraint and resume negotiations.
