The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has indicated that arrests may be forthcoming for three Democratic members of Congress involved in a confrontation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents at a facility in Newark, New Jersey. The incident involved Representatives LaMonica McIver, Bonnie Watson Coleman, and Rob Menendez, who, along with Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, allegedly forced entry into the Delaney Hall Detention Center, leading to a physical altercation with ICE agents. Mayor Baraka was arrested on a trespassing charge. DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin stated that body camera footage shows the lawmakers assaulting ICE enforcement officers, including an incident where a female ICE officer was allegedly body slammed. The Trump administration has suggested that these actions could lead to arrests, emphasizing that no one, including members of Congress, is above the law. The U.S. Attorney for New Jersey, Alina Habba, has launched a federal investigation into the incident. In response, the Democratic lawmakers have denied the allegations of assault, claiming instead that ICE agents escalated the situation. They assert that their actions were part of their oversight responsibilities. Video evidence has been cited by both sides to support their claims. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has warned the Trump administration against pursuing charges against the involved Democrats, stating that such actions would cross a 'red line' and that the administration would 'find out' the consequences. Jeffries criticized the DHS spokesperson as a 'joke' and accused the administration of using tactics to intimidate opposition to their extremism. He emphasized that no one is intimidated by the administration, which he described as led by the most unpopular president after his first 100 days. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem has called for the lawmakers to be censured and removed from their committee assignments, describing their actions as felonies.
