Iran’s intelligence services have detained a foreign national accused of filming sensitive locations around the Bushehr nuclear power plant on behalf of Israel, Iranian state media reported on Tuesday. The individual, described as a documentary filmmaker, was taken into custody by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ intelligence branch after allegedly recording footage of the facility on the country’s Persian Gulf coast. The arrest came amid a wider crackdown on what Tehran says are Israeli espionage networks operating inside the country. The IRGC said it apprehended five suspected Mossad operatives in the western province of Lorestan—specifically in the cities of Khorramabad, Borujerd and Dorud—accusing them of working to advance Israeli intelligence objectives and spread disinformation online. A separate operation in the city of Rey, south of the capital, led to the capture of an Afghan national whose mobile phone allegedly contained instructions for making drones and bombs. Security forces also reported a confrontation with suspected Mossad-linked militants in Rey and released footage of a high-speed pursuit on the Tehran–Qom highway that ended with the arrest of a suspect transporting explosives in a pickup truck. No casualties were reported in the incidents. In a related move, the Ministry of Intelligence said it seized 127 kilograms of explosive materials—including sulfur, potassium nitrate, phosphorus and three liters of liquid explosives—during a raid on a residence in Tehran’s Navab district after a citizen tip-off. Authorities said the substances were intended for attacks in densely populated parts of the capital. Investigations into possible accomplices are ongoing.
