Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s “How to Train Your Dragon” dominated the domestic box office on Wednesday, earning an estimated $8.46 million from 4,356 theaters and lifting its North American haul to $113.72 million. The animated sequel finished well ahead of its nearest mid-week competitors: Disney’s rerelease of “Lilo & Stitch” with $2.4 million, A24’s romantic drama “Materialists” at $1.5 million, Paramount’s “Mission: Impossible 8” at $1.2 million, and Lionsgate’s action spin-off “Ballerina,” which added $1 million for a $45.48 million cumulative total. Among holdovers, Sony’s “Karate Kid: Legends” collected $585,000, sliding 29% from the previous Wednesday to reach $46.34 million domestically. Warner Bros.’ horror pair, “Final Destination: Bloodlines” and “Sinners,” drew $570,000 and $240,000 respectively, bringing their totals to $132.49 million and $276.22 million. Focus Features’ thriller “The Phoenician Scheme” fell 24% to $467,000, while Neon’s “The Life of Chuck” grossed $250,000, pushing its tally to $3.40 million. The mid-week results set the stage for a competitive weekend. Sony will launch Danny Boyle’s zombie sequel “28 Years Later” in 3,444 theaters, challenging “How to Train Your Dragon” for the top spot, while Universal is preparing to roll out “M3GAN 2.0” in more than 3,000 locations the following weekend.
