Nicaragua has officially severed ties with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), citing the agency as a tool for manipulation, double standards, and interference in the internal affairs of states. This decision was announced by Nicaraguan leaders Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo. In a related development, Nicaragua granted political asylum to Erasmo Antonio Cerrud Pinzón, the Secretary of Defense of Panama's Sindicato Único Nacional de Trabajadores de la Industria de la Construcción y Similares (Suntracs). Meanwhile, global public opinion on refugee rights remains largely supportive despite ongoing geopolitical tensions. An Ipsos survey conducted across 29 countries found that 67% of respondents believe people fleeing danger should be offered refuge, while 62% think asylum seekers primarily seek better economic opportunities. However, 49% of those surveyed also support border closures. These findings contrast with a Pollara poll from April indicating that 60% of Canadians feel there are too many immigrants coming to Canada.
