Jaishankar: India Will Strike Deep Into Pakistan After Pahalgam Attack, Disables 8 Airfields in Operation Sindoor

Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has stated that India will retaliate against terrorist attacks, including by striking deep within Pakistan if provoked. He emphasized that retribution will target terrorist organizations and their leadership wherever they are found. Jaishankar's remarks follow the April 22 Pahalgam attack, which killed 26 people and led to a brief military conflict between India and Pakistan. In response, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting nine terrorist complexes in Pakistan, including Bahawalpur and Muridke. Pakistan responded with Operation Bunyan al-Marsoos. The conflict ended with a ceasefire on May 10 after talks between the directors general of military operations. During the hostilities, India's strikes disabled eight Pakistani airfields. Both sides reported losses, including Indian Rafale and Mirage aircraft. During his visit to Brussels, Jaishankar reiterated that the conflict is not between India and Pakistan, but between India and terrorism. He described Pakistan as using terrorism as an instrument of state policy and said Pakistan is training thousands of terrorists in the open and unleashing them on India. Jaishankar called on China to avoid ambiguity or double standards in combating terrorism, especially given its close ties with Pakistan. He indicated there is scope for step-by-step improvement in India-China relations. In Brussels, Jaishankar met with European Union leaders, including President Ursula von der Leyen and High Representative Kaja Kallas, who condemned the Pahalgam attack and expressed support for India. Discussions included the India-EU Strategic Dialogue, cooperation in defence, maritime security, counter-terrorism, cyber and AI, and advancing negotiations on a free trade agreement.
