Market Brief
Daily market recaps with key events, stock movements, and global influences
An early-season heatwave is set to intensify across the Desert Southwest this weekend, prompting Extreme and Excessive Heat Warnings from Saturday through Monday for the lower deserts of southeastern California, southern Arizona and southern Nevada, as well as parts of northwestern Arizona. Forecast highs are expected to reach 110 °F to 115 °F in cities such as Phoenix, Tucson, Yuma and Las Vegas, while Death Valley could approach 120 °F on Sunday. The National Weather Service is advising residents to limit outdoor activity, hydrate frequently and reschedule strenuous work for cooler hours. While the Southwest bakes, the Storm Prediction Center has placed central and eastern Montana under an Enhanced Risk of severe thunderstorms Friday afternoon and evening. Meteorologists expect supercells capable of producing hail larger than 2 inches in diameter, wind gusts exceeding 75 mph and a few tornadoes. The severe weather threat extends southward into portions of the central and southern High Plains. In Colorado, scattered strong to severe storms are forecast across the northeastern plains through 9 p.m., with hazards including 60 mph gusts, hail up to 1 inch and isolated tornadoes. Denver should see only a 30 percent chance of a storm, remaining mainly dry with afternoon temperatures in the upper 80s before climbing into the low to mid-90s over the weekend. The Weather Prediction Center estimates that more than 100 million people could experience at least one day of excessive heat between 12 and 17 June. Climate Central notes that the probability of such temperatures has been made at least three times more likely by climate change, underscoring the dual risks of dangerous heat and severe storms across the western United States.
