President Nicolás Maduro marked Venezuela’s 214th Independence Day by leading a military parade in Caracas and promoting 223 members of the armed forces. In a nationally broadcast address, he ordered the Fuerza Armada Nacional Bolivariana to accelerate the development of missile and anti-missile capabilities, as well as drone and anti-drone systems, using domestic technology and support from "allies and friends" abroad. Maduro said the country is “pacific and noble” but warned that any aggressor “will bite the dust of a terrible defeat.” Separately, opposition leader María Corina Machado released a video message calling on the armed forces to uphold what she described as the popular mandate expressed in the July 28 2024 presidential election, which she maintains was won by opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia. Machado urged officers to shift from "declarations to concrete actions" and asserted that the "regime will fall and there will be justice," accusing the government of handing Venezuela over to foreign powers and terrorist groups. The contrasting messages underscore the deep political divide on a day traditionally devoted to national unity. While Maduro’s government emphasized military strength and sovereignty, Machado framed the anniversary as a reminder of an unfinished struggle for democratic change.
