MSC IRINA, World's Largest Container Ship (24,346 TEUs), Makes First South Asian Port Call at Vizhinjam, Kerala

The world's largest container ship, MSC IRINA, operated by the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) and sailing under the Liberian flag, docked at Vizhinjam International Seaport in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, on June 9, 2025. This marks the vessel's first visit to a South Asian port. MSC IRINA will remain berthed at the port until Tuesday. The vessel has a capacity of 24,346 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units), surpassing OOCL Spain by 150 TEUs. It measures 399.9 metres in length and 61.3 metres in width, and can stack containers up to 26 tiers high. MSC IRINA was launched in March 2023 and began its maiden voyage in April 2023. The ship is equipped with energy-saving features that reduce carbon emissions by up to 4%. Vizhinjam International Seaport, managed by Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd., was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 2, 2025. Since starting trial operations in July 2024 and commercial operations in December, the port has facilitated the berthing of 349 ships and handled 733,000 containers. The arrival of MSC IRINA demonstrates the port's ability to handle Ultra-Large Container Vessels (ULCVs). A new Indian Coast Guard (ICG) jetty was also inaugurated at Vizhinjam Harbour on June 7, 2025. The 76.7-metre facility, situated 10 nautical miles from major international shipping lanes, is designed to enhance coastal surveillance, vessel turnaround, and mission deployment for the ICG.
