New York Attorney General Letitia James is under federal investigation for alleged mortgage fraud, involving multiple real estate transactions. The FBI and the U.S. Attorney's office are probing whether James falsified federal documents to secure favorable loan terms on properties in Virginia and Brooklyn. The scrutiny includes a Virginia home James allegedly claimed as her primary residence, despite legal requirements to reside in New York. The allegations span a 40-year paper trail, including false mortgage filings, financial disclosure misstatements, undisclosed rental income, and taxpayer-funded jet rides. In a separate development, James, along with attorneys general from 19 other states, has filed two lawsuits against the Trump administration. These lawsuits challenge the administration's policy of conditioning billions of dollars in federal funding for emergency preparedness and transportation on states' cooperation with immigration enforcement. The legal actions target the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of Transportation (DOT), led by DHS Secretary Kristi Noem and DOT Secretary Sean Duffy respectively, arguing that such conditions are unconstitutional and exceed the agencies' legal authority. The lawsuits also contest the administration's attempt to enforce Trump's mass deportation agenda through federal funding.
