Kilmar Abrego Garcia pleaded not guilty on Friday to federal charges accusing him of taking part in a conspiracy to smuggle migrants into the United States. Arraigned in U.S. District Court in Nashville, the 29-year-old Maryland resident answered a six-count indictment that grew out of a 2022 traffic stop in Tennessee. Prosecutors argued he should remain behind bars, describing him as a flight risk and alleging he also trafficked drugs and weapons, claims his lawyers deny. Abrego Garcia’s appearance came one week after U.S. authorities flew him back from a Salvadoran prison, where he had been sent in March when immigration officials deported him despite a court order allowing him to remain in the country. The Supreme Court later directed the government to repatriate him, intensifying scrutiny of the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement practices. During Friday’s hours-long hearing, a magistrate judge said she would issue a written decision “sooner rather than later” on whether Abrego Garcia can be released while awaiting trial. Separately, the defendant’s civil attorneys have asked another federal judge to impose sanctions on the Justice Department, arguing officials defied earlier rulings by delaying his return. No trial date has been set.
