The US Army Reserve has created Detachment 201, an “Executive Innovation Corps” intended to accelerate the military’s adoption of artificial intelligence and other cutting-edge technologies. The service announced on 13–14 June that four Silicon Valley leaders have accepted direct commissions at the unusually high rank of lieutenant colonel and will serve part-time as strategic advisers. The inaugural cohort comprises Palantir Chief Technology Officer Shyam Sankar, Meta Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth, OpenAI Chief Product Officer Kevin Weil, and Bob McGrew, chief of the AI startup Thinking Machines and a former senior executive at OpenAI. The officers will report to Army leadership while retaining their private-sector roles, providing guidance on software development, data analytics and advanced manufacturing. Army officials said the initiative is designed to bring private-sector speed and expertise into defense procurement cycles that can otherwise stretch over decades. Sankar called the program a way for technologists to “give back,” while Bosworth described the commission as an opportunity to apply commercial innovation to national defense. Additional appointments are expected as the corps expands.
