U.S. President Donald Trump said on 18 June 2025 that he personally prevented a war between the nuclear-armed neighbours India and Pakistan. He credited the effort to close coordination with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistani Army Chief Gen. Asim Munir, declaring, “I stopped the war,” while adding, “I love Pakistan” and calling Modi “a fantastic man.” Trump told reporters he had spoken with Modi the previous night and that the two leaders were discussing a potential trade agreement. He added that Modi “stopped the war on India’s side,” while he assumed responsibility for calming tensions from Pakistan’s side, and said no one had adequately reported his role in defusing the crisis. Indian officials have disputed Trump’s account. New Delhi has reiterated that it does not seek third-party mediation in its dealings with Islamabad and maintains that any ceasefire along the border is the result of bilateral decisions, not external intervention. Pakistan has not publicly commented on Trump’s latest remarks.
