Federal immigration agents backed by National Guard personnel executed search warrants on July 10 at two Glass House Brands cannabis farms in Camarillo and Carpinteria, Southern California. ICE and CBP said the operation targeted immigration and labor violations at the state-licensed facilities. Authorities arrested roughly 200 people suspected of being in the country unlawfully and removed at least 10 unaccompanied migrant children who had been working at the sites. DHS has opened a child-labor and human-trafficking investigation into the company, which denies knowingly employing minors. The raid turned violent when several hundred protesters hurled rocks at departing vehicles. An unidentified man was filmed firing a handgun at officers; the FBI is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to his conviction. Four U.S. citizens face federal charges for allegedly assaulting or resisting agents. Multiple injuries were reported. A farmworker advocacy group said one employee died on July 11 from a 30-foot fall suffered while apparently fleeing the Camarillo site. Local media also reported a second man remains on life support after a separate fall during the chaos. The operation has intensified friction between Governor Gavin Newsom, who condemned the use of tear gas near children, and federal officials who point to evidence of child exploitation. Campaign‐finance filings show Glass House president Graham Farrar donated $10,000 to Newsom’s 2018 gubernatorial bid. Federal probes into the shooting and the alleged labor violations are continuing; the company says it is cooperating with authorities.
