Russia has transferred an additional 1,200 bodies of Ukrainian soldiers to Kyiv, Ukrainian officials and Russian state media said on Saturday. The delivery follows a similar handover of 1,200 bodies on Friday and an earlier shipment of 1,212 remains on Wednesday under arrangements brokered during talks in Istanbul. According to Ukraine’s Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, the latest consignments raise the total number of Ukrainian remains repatriated this week to about 3,612—roughly three-fifths of the 6,000 bodies Russia said it would return. During the first exchange on 12 June, Ukraine handed over 27 bodies of Russian servicemen, but Russian sources say no Russian remains were received in the subsequent transfers. Ukrainian authorities plan to conduct forensic examinations and DNA testing to confirm identities before the bodies are released to families. The repatriations are being carried out alongside periodic prisoner swaps, which both sides say are continuing despite stalled broader peace negotiations.
