Trump Moves to Subpoena Harvard, Threatens Accreditation Over Antisemitism

The Trump administration on 9 July escalated its standoff with Harvard University, saying the Department of Homeland Security will issue administrative subpoenas for information about the school’s foreign students and warning that the Ivy League institution may no longer meet accreditation standards. DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said the subpoenas—directed at Harvard’s Student and Exchange Visitor Program—are necessary after the university repeatedly declined "non-coercive" requests for data. The demands cover records, communications and disciplinary files dating back to 1 January 2020 and are aimed at identifying alleged visa abuses and student involvement in protests the administration has labelled antisemitic or supportive of terrorism. Separately, the Departments of Education and Health and Human Services notified Harvard’s accreditor, the New England Commission of Higher Education, that the university violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act by failing to protect Jewish and Israeli students. Education Secretary Linda McMahon wrote that there is "strong evidence" Harvard falls short of accreditation standards, a finding that could jeopardize federal student aid and other funding if the commission agrees. Harvard said it will comply with all lawful requests but called the subpoenas and accreditation challenge "unwarranted" and "retaliatory." The school is already suing to recover about $2.5 billion in frozen federal grants and to overturn earlier moves barring new international enrollments; a Boston federal judge has blocked those measures while litigation proceeds, with the next hearing set for 21 July. International students—roughly 6,800 last year, or 27 % of enrollment—remain critical to Harvard’s finances as the confrontation with Washington widens.
