Iran’s navy said on 14 June that it intercepted a British destroyer in the northern Indian Ocean near the Sea of Oman on the night of 13 June. State-run news agency IRNA and the navy’s First Naval Region public-relations office said the vessel was detected by surveillance systems and forced to change course after Iranian combat drones issued warnings. According to IRNA and Fars News Agency, the destroyer was approaching the Persian Gulf to provide targeting data that would help guide Israeli missiles toward Iran. Iranian officials said the ship turned away after the drones intervened and did not enter Gulf waters. The United Kingdom has not commented on the claim, and Tehran has not provided evidence identifying the ship. Photographs released by Iranian media were questioned by independent analysts, who said the pictured vessel resembles a UAE corvette rather than a Royal Navy destroyer. The incident adds to tensions in Gulf waters, where Iranian and Western navies have faced off repeatedly in recent years.
