Daily market recaps with key events, stock movements, and global influences
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has rejected NATO's call to increase Slovakia's defense spending to 5% of GDP, describing such demands as unrealistic and impossible to achieve in the short term. Currently, Slovakia's defense budget stands at around 2% of GDP. Fico emphasized that a sudden jump from 2% to 5% is not feasible and proposed instead to allocate increased defense funds toward dual-use projects, including hospitals and infrastructure. The NATO Secretary General and former U.S. President Donald Trump have advocated for member countries to raise their defense spending to 5% of GDP, but Slovakia remains resistant to this target.
